Researchers have been aware of the link between periodontal disease and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) since the early 1900s, but the cause and effect relationship was unclear until recently when Maximilian Konig MD discovered more links between the diseases. He stated he had never been so close to uncovering the cause of RA, which can potentially lead to a cure or more effective treatment to combat the disease.
