Tips for Caring for Clear Aligners

Many people choose Invisalign clear aligners because they are a discreet way to straighten their teeth without bulky brackets and wires. Although caring for your clear braces isn’t difficult, following your dentist’s recommendations is essential for the best results.

Clean Regularly

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and lukewarm water to brush your clear aligners, or soak them in an Invisalign cleaning solution or soapy water.

Remove to Eat

When you're eating or drinking, removing your aligners is essential. This will help you avoid damage. It’s ok to leave them in to drink water, however.

Brush and Floss

To remove bacteria and food particles from your teeth, be sure to brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss between each tooth daily.

Store Properly

Your dentist will give you a storage case, so put your aligners in this case when you’re not wearing them. Also, keep them out of the sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Invisalign clear aligners | Cosmetic Dentist Vallejo CAIf you’re considering Invisalign and live in the Vallejo, CA area, you might have some questions about how it works and what to expect for results. Patients often choose Invisalign because they want to avoid brackets and wires or because they want to enjoy an unrestricted diet during treatment.

Like traditional braces, the goal of Invisalign is to gradually move teeth into alignment, improving the bite, oral health function, and the appearance of teeth. Rather than using brackets and wires, however, Invisalign relies on clear aligners, arranged in a series, that patients wear for about two weeks each before moving onto the next.

What to Expect During Invisalign Treatment in 94590

When we proceed with Invisalign in our Vallejo, CA dental office, we ask that patients wear their Invisalign braces for about 22 hours per day. Leaving them out for long periods of time will result in slowing down treatment. You can certainly remove your aligners to clean your teeth morning and night (and your Invisalign clear braces, too) and to eat any of the foods you want to enjoy.

Invisalign works well for most orthodontic cases. Give us a call to find out if this discreet form of treatment will give you the smile you have always wanted!

Many of our Invisalign patients have actually had their teeth straightened in the past using traditional metal braces. The issue is that they didn't consistently wear their retainers after their orthodontic treatment and their teeth shifted.

It is important for patients to wear their retainer as directed by the staff at Morgan Nordstrom and William C. Vizzolini, D.D.S. for the rest of their life or risk their teeth shifting back to their original positions.

Wearing Retainers After Invisalign

Even though Invisalign shifts your teeth differently than traditional metal braces, retainers are still required.

If you lose your retainer, don't put it off. Give our Vallejo, CA dental office a call so we can fit you for a new one. We don't want you to lose the progress you made with your Invisalign treatment.

During your dental appointment with us, we'll make impressions of your teeth for the new retainer.

Call Us to Replace Your Retainer

While you may not see an immediate change in your smile at first, they will be more obvious as time passes. If you take your retainer out for a few days, you'll notice that it might feel uncomfortable when you wear it again.

Your retainers are fabricated to fit your current smile. If it starts changing because you aren't wearing your retainer, we may need to make a new one.

Patients may not realize that their teeth go under immense pressure and wear and tear daily after eating, biting, chewing, and speaking. Your retainer is there to keep your smile beautiful and straight.

If you need a new retainer, give us a call immediately at (707) 643-2660.

Retainers help maintain the correct alignment of your teeth after you receive orthodontic treatment. There are several different types of retainers from which you can choose, but acrylic retainers continue to stand the test of time.

What Are Acrylic Retainers?

Acrylic retainers, also called Hawley retainers, are made of metal and acrylic. Designed to fit your mouth’s unique shape, the acrylic portion comfortably fits the roof of your mouth to provide durability and support. A thin metal wire attaches to the back of the retainer and stretches across the front of your teeth to preserve their alignment.

Benefits of Acrylic Retainers

Acrylic retainers are considered safe and can last up to 10 years. They are easily adjustable, so your dentist can continue to fine-tune your bite after braces if needed.

Unlike clear retainers, acrylic retainers allow your top and bottom teeth to align and touch comfortably. Acrylic retainers are also easy to clean, and they can be easily repaired if they are ever broken or damaged.

The good news is that Invisalign in Vallejo, CA means clear aligners that are barely visible to the observer.

But can Invisalign fix an overbite? The short answer is yes. In addition to it's fast and effective teeth straightening abilities, Invisalign can also fix an overbite. However, your dentist will make the final determination based on an exam consultation.

The first step is always a consultation with your dentist. We want to know what you’re looking for in a new smile, and we want to confirm that your choice of dentistry will provide the desired result.

Issues that Invisalign can correct:

  • Crooked, twisted, and overlapping teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overbite, underbite, crossbite

An even bite means less wear on your teeth, which then means better oral health and a more attractive smile. In some cases, your dentist may recommend pretreatments before Invisalign to produce the desired result.

Invisalign can straighten your teeth and perfect your bite without the cost or time commitment of metal braces. At Morgan Nordstrom, DDS and William C. Vizzolini, DDS, we want to help patients achieve a healthy, beautiful smile that will last a lifetime.

Insurance and Invisalign

Invisalign can be covered by dental insurance, depending on your coverage and your provider. Several dental insurance plans cover Invisalign treatment just like they cover traditional braces and orthodontics. Depending on your insurance coverage, your insurance company may pay for a specific dollar amount or a percentage of the treatment’s cost. However, it’s important to note that many insurance providers have cap the amount used for orthodontic treatment.

Insurance Plans We Accept

At Morgan Nordstrom, DDS and William C. Vizzolini, DDS, we accept all major insurance PPO plans. We are a Delta Premier provider, but we don’t participate in-network with other insurance plans because we work with patients to determine their care instead of the insurance company. We always bill your insurance company directly so we can maximize your benefits and you can receive the coverage you deserve.

Benefits of Clear Braces

The benefits of clear aligner treatments like Invisalign continue to draw thousands of orthodontic patients every year. This simple, unobtrusive dental technology lets patients straighten their smiles in a way that’s more convenient than ever before. Girl Taking Invisalign Tray Out of Mouth

Invisalign works in a way similar to how traditional braces do, and the ultimate objective of straightening your teeth remains the same. Clear braces, however, are more comfortable and more user-friendly than their metal counterparts, and you never have to worry about thick, painful wires when you choose Invisalign.

With clear aligners, you experience benefits such as:

  • Fewer trips to your dentist’s office
  • Clear plastic trays that don’t draw attention to your teeth
  • Visible straightening results that you can observe
  • The ability to remove your braces when you want to eat a meal or clean your teeth
  • Less discomfort during your orthodontic treatment due to not having sharp metal in your mouth
  • A more professional appearance

The most significant reason most people turn to Invisalign is its removable trays. Before treatments like Invisalign, having braces that you could remove yourself was unheard of. Everyone who wanted straight teeth had only one choice: metal braces that were permanently adhered to their teeth for the duration of their orthodontic treatment (typically several years).

Clear braces, however, change the game entirely. With Invisalign trays, you can remove your braces to brush and floss your teeth, making it easier to maintain your oral hygiene than ever before. Additionally, you can go a few hours without your braces for a special event, such as a wedding. Plastic aligners make it possible to correct your smile without having to sacrifice the normalcy in your life.

With Invisalign, you also don’t have to adhere to the strict dietary restrictions that inevitably accompany metal braces. Because you take your trays out to eat, there’s no need to avoid sticky, crunchy foods or to give up chewing gum! You can still enjoy the healthy, well-balanced diet you’re used to without sacrificing foods you love.

Invisalign in 94590

If you want to get started with Invisalign at our dental office, the first step is for Dr. Morgan Nordstrom to perform a full evaluation of your teeth and bite. She will also discuss your concerns about your smile and talk through how you would like to see it change.

Invisalign in above teethOnce you’re ready to begin, our Vallejo dentists will take digital images and impressions of your teeth for the Invisalign dental lab.

When Invisalign receives all of your information, a specialized laboratory will make your aligner trays to move and straighten your teeth gradually. Dr. Nordstrom will discuss how frequently you should change your trays and how often you need to have regular dental visits so that we can move your Invisalign treatment along at the right pace.

You will typically receive a handful of aligners at once, and you will progress through the aligners on your own between dental visits before returning to our dental office for a checkup. If you have an “average” Invisalign case, you can expect to wear approximately 25 or 30 different sets of trays for about two weeks each.

A general rule of thumb is to wear your trays for at least 22 out of every 24 hours. You should always take them out to eat and to brush your teeth. Because your trays are removable, keeping your teeth clean is easy. You can brush and floss without needing to use specially designed floss or mini toothbrushes.

How long your treatment takes depends on how far your teeth need to move and your compliance with wearing your Invisalign aligners. Because Invisalign fits your teeth snugly, getting used to wearing your trays should be easy. You’ll be able to talk normally with just a little practice, and you will eventually forget that you’re even wearing braces!

Invisalign for Teens and Adults

Invisalign in Vallejo is an excellent choice for older teens and adults who want straighter teeth.

If you’re asking yourself, “Is Invisalign right for me?” the answer is most likely “yes” if you’re willing to commit to wearing your trays every day and visiting your dentist regularly for necessary exams. Invisalign works well for patients who are:

  • In good overall oral health
  • Willing to wear their aligners at all times other than when cleaning their teeth or eating
  • Working professionals or in social situations where standard braces would be inconvenient

When traditional orthodontics do not fit into your life, Invisalign clear aligners are a great option. They work through a similar concept as traditional braces by gently moving your teeth a little at a time. The difference is that Invisalign does not require wires or brackets. All you need are your clear aligner trays and regular visits to our Vallejo dental office to monitor your progress!

A Solution for Most Mild Orthodontic Cases

Invisalign Clear Aligners

Invisalign is very versatile and can address several common orthodontic issues such as crooked teeth, crowded teeth, underbite, overbite, protruding front teeth, and overlapping teeth. The best way to find out if Invisalign will work for you is to see one of our Vallejo dentists for an evaluation.

Clear braces are usually an excellent treatment option if you have mild-to-moderate orthodontic needs. If your teeth suffer from severe overlapping, or if you have a complicated dental situation, we may recommend traditional braces.

Remember, each Invisalign case is a bit different. The specifics of your treatment will always depend on your unique anatomy and how quickly your teeth respond to the aligners. Your treatment may take more time, or even less, than a friend or loved one’s did. The best way to finish your treatment as quickly as you can is by maintaining 100% patient compliance and wearing your aligners for at least 22 hours each day. Don’t skip days, and don’t take your trays out for any longer than you need.

By taking these simple steps, you’ll be well on your way to a straighter smile with convenient, attractive aligners.
