Tips for Caring for Clear Aligners

Many people choose Invisalign clear aligners because they are a discreet way to straighten their teeth without bulky brackets and wires. Although caring for your clear braces isn’t difficult, following your dentist’s recommendations is essential for the best results.

Clean Regularly

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and lukewarm water to brush your clear aligners, or soak them in an Invisalign cleaning solution or soapy water.

Remove to Eat

When you're eating or drinking, removing your aligners is essential. This will help you avoid damage. It’s ok to leave them in to drink water, however.

Brush and Floss

To remove bacteria and food particles from your teeth, be sure to brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss between each tooth daily.

Store Properly

Your dentist will give you a storage case, so put your aligners in this case when you’re not wearing them. Also, keep them out of the sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

The innovative design of Invisalign® clear aligners aims to minimize speech interference while shifting a patient’s teeth into alignment. However, the manner in which Invisalign’s aligners fit snugly over teeth can sometimes cause temporary impediments to a wearer’s speech. A patient’s tongue may also require an initial period to adapt to the aligners.

However, the majority of users who report any initial challenges while speaking upon starting Invisalign also report that these issues are generally minimal and short-lived as they become accustomed to wearing the aligners. To minimize these issues or avoid them altogether, it’s recommended that patients regularly engage in speech exercises and consistently wear their aligners as directed (20-22 hours per day, with removal only for eating, drinking, brushing, flossing, and aligner care) to ensure as smooth a transition as possible.

In the rare cases where these issues persist, a patient should consult with the treating dentist about the possible need for aligner adjustments.

Overall, Invisalign aligners provide a discreet and effective solution for teeth straightening, and they generally do so with minimal impact on an individual’s speech function.

Who’s the Best Invisalign Provider Near Me?

If you’re looking for a Vallejo dentist and dental practice with experience guiding patients through the Invisalign process and quickly and informatively addressing any issues that arise, rather than just Googling “Invisalign near me” and taking your chances, contact Dr. Morgan Nordstrom and the team at Morgan Nordstrom, DDS, William C. Vizzolini, DDS to schedule a consultation!

Your Invisalign® provider in Vallejo, CA, provides a custom schedule that includes when to change your aligners and how often you should visit our dental office for check-ins. These check-ins are to monitor your orthodontic progress. Typically, patients check in every four to six weeks.

You’ll usually visit the dentist less often than if you had traditional bracket and wire braces.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic system made of clear custom tooth aligners. You wear the first aligners in the series for about two weeks before moving on to the next. You continue this course until you’ve finished the supply. After treatment, we fit you with a custom retainer to ensure long-term, permanent results.

But first, ensuring you’re a candidate for treatment is essential. This means coming in for a consultation and conversation with the dentist. This initial meeting determines your candidacy and lets you know how long you’ll be in treatment. We’ll also discuss costs and answer any questions you might have.

If your dentist suggests Invisalign clear aligners to you because your teeth aren’t as straight as you’d like them to be, you will probably have questions. You’ll want to know how long to wear your aligners and how to clean them. However, you may not think about what to do if you lose or damage one of your Invisalign aligners.

What if I Lose or Damage an Invisalign aligner?

The important thing to remember is that it’s not the end of the world if you lose or damage one of your clear aligners. Here’s what to do if it happens:

Contact your dentist – It’s not uncommon to lose or damage a clear aligner, so don’t worry. Contact your dentist to make an appointment and to find out what your next steps should be.

Wear your backup set – If you have kept your previous aligner as instructed by your dentist, you can put it in to replace a lost or broken aligner.

Wear your next set – If you have your next set of aligners, you can see if those fit. If you do end up wearing your next set, be sure to replace both the top and bottom set of aligners since they are designed to work together.

Benefits of Clear Braces

The benefits of clear aligner treatments like Invisalign continue to draw thousands of orthodontic patients every year. This simple, unobtrusive dental technology lets patients straighten their smiles in a way that’s more convenient than ever before. Girl Taking Invisalign Tray Out of Mouth

Invisalign works in a way similar to how traditional braces do, and the ultimate objective of straightening your teeth remains the same. Clear braces, however, are more comfortable and more user-friendly than their metal counterparts, and you never have to worry about thick, painful wires when you choose Invisalign.

With clear aligners, you experience benefits such as:

  • Fewer trips to your dentist’s office
  • Clear plastic trays that don’t draw attention to your teeth
  • Visible straightening results that you can observe
  • The ability to remove your braces when you want to eat a meal or clean your teeth
  • Less discomfort during your orthodontic treatment due to not having sharp metal in your mouth
  • A more professional appearance

The most significant reason most people turn to Invisalign is its removable trays. Before treatments like Invisalign, having braces that you could remove yourself was unheard of. Everyone who wanted straight teeth had only one choice: metal braces that were permanently adhered to their teeth for the duration of their orthodontic treatment (typically several years).

Clear braces, however, change the game entirely. With Invisalign trays, you can remove your braces to brush and floss your teeth, making it easier to maintain your oral hygiene than ever before. Additionally, you can go a few hours without your braces for a special event, such as a wedding. Plastic aligners make it possible to correct your smile without having to sacrifice the normalcy in your life.

With Invisalign, you also don’t have to adhere to the strict dietary restrictions that inevitably accompany metal braces. Because you take your trays out to eat, there’s no need to avoid sticky, crunchy foods or to give up chewing gum! You can still enjoy the healthy, well-balanced diet you’re used to without sacrificing foods you love.

If you want to get started with Invisalign at our dental office, the first step is for Dr. Morgan Nordstrom to perform a full evaluation of your teeth and bite. She will also discuss your concerns about your smile and talk through how you would like to see it change.

Invisalign in above teethOnce you’re ready to begin, our Vallejo dentists will take digital images and impressions of your teeth for the Invisalign dental lab.

When Invisalign receives all of your information, a specialized laboratory will make your aligner trays to move and straighten your teeth gradually. Dr. Nordstrom will discuss how frequently you should change your trays and how often you need to have regular dental visits so that we can move your Invisalign treatment along at the right pace.

You will typically receive a handful of aligners at once, and you will progress through the aligners on your own between dental visits before returning to our dental office for a checkup. If you have an “average” Invisalign case, you can expect to wear approximately 25 or 30 different sets of trays for about two weeks each.

A general rule of thumb is to wear your trays for at least 22 out of every 24 hours. You should always take them out to eat and to brush your teeth. Because your trays are removable, keeping your teeth clean is easy. You can brush and floss without needing to use specially designed floss or mini toothbrushes.

How long your treatment takes depends on how far your teeth need to move and your compliance with wearing your Invisalign aligners. Because Invisalign fits your teeth snugly, getting used to wearing your trays should be easy. You’ll be able to talk normally with just a little practice, and you will eventually forget that you’re even wearing braces!

Invisalign for Teens and Adults

Invisalign in Vallejo is an excellent choice for older teens and adults who want straighter teeth.

If you’re asking yourself, “Is Invisalign right for me?” the answer is most likely “yes” if you’re willing to commit to wearing your trays every day and visiting your dentist regularly for necessary exams. Invisalign works well for patients who are:

  • In good overall oral health
  • Willing to wear their aligners at all times other than when cleaning their teeth or eating
  • Working professionals or in social situations where standard braces would be inconvenient

When traditional orthodontics do not fit into your life, Invisalign clear aligners are a great option. They work through a similar concept as traditional braces by gently moving your teeth a little at a time. The difference is that Invisalign does not require wires or brackets. All you need are your clear aligner trays and regular visits to our Vallejo dental office to monitor your progress!

A Solution for Most Mild Orthodontic Cases

Invisalign Clear Aligners

Invisalign is very versatile and can address several common orthodontic issues such as crooked teeth, crowded teeth, underbite, overbite, protruding front teeth, and overlapping teeth. The best way to find out if Invisalign will work for you is to see one of our Vallejo dentists for an evaluation.

Clear braces are usually an excellent treatment option if you have mild-to-moderate orthodontic needs. If your teeth suffer from severe overlapping, or if you have a complicated dental situation, we may recommend traditional braces.

Remember, each Invisalign case is a bit different. The specifics of your treatment will always depend on your unique anatomy and how quickly your teeth respond to the aligners. Your treatment may take more time, or even less, than a friend or loved one’s did. The best way to finish your treatment as quickly as you can is by maintaining 100% patient compliance and wearing your aligners for at least 22 hours each day. Don’t skip days, and don’t take your trays out for any longer than you need.

By taking these simple steps, you’ll be well on your way to a straighter smile with convenient, attractive aligners.
