Don't Let Bad Breath Get in Your Way

Life is busy. If you have a family or a busy professional life, you probably find yourself grabbing food whenever and wherever you can to keep those fires burning in order to get through the day.

An unexpected side effect of being busy may mean that your oral health suffers in one way or another. You may skip brushing and flossing, or even find yourself popping a mint into your mouth to mask the mouth odors that can develop when you neglect your teeth and gums.

Bad breath can take a toll on your social and professional life. It doesn’t have to, however.

Here are some simple tips to keep your mouth smelling fresh:

Tip #1 – Mouthwash Is Not Enough

No amount of rinsing can replace brushing and flossing. A regular home care routine keeps your mouth free of bacteria and gum disease, which create nasty smells.

The same goes for mints and gum. They just temporarily mask an odor from an underlying issue.

Tip #2 – Brush Your Tongue

The rough surface of your tongue can harbor a number of bacteria that cause a lingering “bad breath” smell that is easily recognizable. In addition to brushing your teeth, thoroughly brush your tongue to remove the bacteria that collect there. You can also choose to invest in a tongue scraper or a toothbrush dedicated to cleaning your tongue. Just be sure to keep it clean!

Tip #3 – Stay Hydrated

Dry mouth can lead to bad breath. The best choice when it comes to hydration is water because it does not contain the acid or sugar typically found in soda or energy drinks.

Tip #4 – Seek Medical Advice

If bad breath continues, it could be an indication of an underlying medical issue. Be sure to ask your doctor if you can’t seem to control bad breath through traditional methods.

If you are seeking dentists in Vallejo who will work with you toward a healthy and beautiful smile, we encourage you to give us a call! We can answer questions about bad breath or any other oral condition that develops.
