At Morgan Nordstrom, DDS and William C. Vizzolini, DDS, we understand dental anxiety and phobias. Both are good reasons to talk to your dentist about sedation dentistry in Vallejo. However, there are also other reasons to consider oral sedation.
Reasons You Might Choose Oral Sedation
Besides dental phobia and anxiety, you might consider dental sedation if you:
- Have a strong gag reflex
- Are undergoing multiple treatments
- Are undergoing an invasive procedure
- Are feeling nervous about treatment
Oral sedation is safe because your dentist or a team member takes a thorough health history to make sure the options we offer are safe for you. Additionally, we monitor you closely throughout treatment.
Oral Sedation Options for Relaxing Dentistry
Of course, we anesthetize treatment areas if we’re performing invasive dentistry, but for advanced relaxation, we offer two options.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is commonly called laughing gas. It will not make you laugh, but it does provide a detached, happy feeling that puts you at ease. One of the benefits of nitrous oxide is that it doesn’t leave you with a lingering altered state. So when we stop delivering the gas through your nasal mask, you’re free to resume your day and even drive yourself home from treatment.
Oral Sedation
This method of sedation is a pill taken before dental treatment. It is more potent than nitrous oxide, but you’ll still be able to respond to the dentist’s questions or directions. However, you’ll likely not remember any of it! Oral sedation lingers, so you’ll need transportation and rest for the remainder of the day.
Your dentist may use one option or a combination of dental sedation for best results.
