Healthy gums are the solid foundation of a healthy smile. If you're suffering from gum disease, your teeth are at risk. The problem is that gum disease can be tricky to spot on your own, and that's why routine visits to your dentist to maintain your teeth and gums are so important. Here's what you should know about gum disease.

The Tell-Tale Signs of Early Gum Disease

Gum disease initially moves slowly and typically doesn't cause much pain. However, there are some tell-tale signs to alert you to the problem, such as:

  • Gums bleeding during brushing and flossing
  • Chronic bad breath that doesn't go away with brushing, flossing, or mouthwash
  • Red, swollen, or irritated gums

If you notice any of these signs, it's time to contact your dentist. You may be suffering from gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease. The good news is that you may be able to successfully manage the condition with some improvements to your home care and a thorough teeth cleaning from your dentist.

Understanding Advanced Gum Disease

Advanced gum disease is also known as periodontitis. If you're suffering from periodontitis, you may notice these signs and symptoms:

  • Tooth mobility
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Pain or discomfort during chewing
  • Bite misalignment
  • Receding gums
  • Foul odor or taste in your mouth

Unfortunately, there is no cure for periodontitis. However, our team is here to help you manage your condition with deep cleanings, additional routine cleanings for maintenance throughout the year, antibiotic therapy, and possible gum surgery for severe cases.
