According to the Journal of Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery, dental implants have a high success rate of up to 97 percent even after a decade. However, to promote this level of implant success, it’s important to:
- Brush and floss after meals or at least twice daily.
- Continue seeing your dentist every six months for checkups and cleanings.
- Follow all aftercare instructions if provided.
When a Dental Implant Fails: What You Should Know
If your dental implant fails, it will likely feel loose or detached in the gum, and you may experience discomfort and even swelling. This is called peri-implantitis.
The goal is to remove the implant, treat the infection, and, if possible, place a new implant after healing. In some cases, you may require a graft to restore any lost bone. It may take a few months before your dentist can place a new implant.
We’ll evaluate your dental implant, discuss treatment options, and work toward the goal of replacing it. The team at Morgan Nordstrom, DDS, William C. Vizzolini, DDS, is always here for you!
