Why do I need an oral cancer screening if I don't use tobacco products?

Even if you don’t use tobacco, oral cancer screenings are an essential component of preventive dental visits. When caught early, oral cancer is highly treatable; that’s why we perform an oral cancer screening when you visit us twice a year for a cleaning and exam.

It only takes a few seconds for us to examine your mouth, gums, and lips, and it could save your life.

Oral Cancer Risk Factors

Tobacco use is indeed a risk factor for oral cancer, but there are other reasons for non-tobacco users to get screened, including the following:

HPV infection — According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, the human papillomavirus is linked to oral cancer.

Other risk factors — This same research states that if you consume alcohol or have a compromised immune system, you could be more susceptible to developing oral cancer.
